Three documents, in the industry's own words
The 6G white paper
Huawei's 6G white paper lists "augmented human sensing" as a target use case for integrated sensing and communication. Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Intel, MediaTek, and Samsung publish research toward the same standard.
The standards report
ETSI GR ISC 001, published by the ETSI industry specification group for integrated sensing and communication in April 2025, sets out the sensing use cases and deployment scenarios, including human sensing.
The DARPA program
DARPA's Next-Generation Non-Surgical Neurotechnology (N3) program funded 6 teams in May 2019, $100M+ over four years, to build brain read and write interfaces that do not require surgery, with a stated latency target of 50 ms. Reported awards include $19.48M and $18M, and a $9.8M Phase II contract to Rice University.
